A popular Western conception of feng shui is that’s it’s simply a way to organize and streamline the possessions within your home. However, this ancient technique is more than a way to de-clutter, it’s a symbolic Chinese system of aesthetics that when practiced can bring harmony to your home.

The literal translation of feng shui is “wind and water,” and the practice of feng shui accounts for astronomy, environment, and the natural elements when planning the layout of a building.

Feng shui advises the strategic placement of objects within any given building so they remain in harmony with the surrounding environment and inspire positive energy and balance.

Factors that determine each positive location include the year the individual was born, the surrounding natural environment, and movements of the solar system.

With origins dating back to the third century B.C. during the Han Dynasty in China, feng shui was historically practiced with a compass-style instrument that read the stars and determined the North-South orientations of Chinese cities. Feng shui was viewed as a tool to ensure the health, wealth and prosperity of the imperial dynasties, and is still used today as an element of traditional architecture in China.

The purpose of feng shui in modern culture is to create human environments that harness good qi: the literal translation of qi is “life force energy,” a state that can swing between positive and negative energies according to the structure of your home and its interaction with your surrounding environment.

In addition to the placement of objects and furniture within your home, there are products and simple techniques that will help you create balance in your home.

Wind chimes are an instrumental component of feng shui, however they must be strategically placed. The sound of a wind chime is believed to activate or enliven the Chi or “energy” in an area, and the melodic sound of a wind chime will subtly alter your own mood, which in turn will enhance the energy and peace of your environment.

Choose wind chimes that correspond to the size of your space—choose a smaller chime for offices and bedrooms and large wind chimes for open outdoor spaces. Use wind chimes made from a material that corresponds to each area’s element. For example, a southeastern room corresponds to the element wood, so you would want to use a wooden wind chime in that room.

Gongs are an alternative to wind chimes that also evoke scintillating sound and counteract negative Chi.

Arbors and trellises can be used to inspire balance in the gardens and recreational areas outside your home. Climbing vines can be trained around the lattices of a trellis, which blends nature with the structures in your backyard so the two elements live in harmony together.

Arbors are also an excellent way to create a reflective retreat outside your home—a place where you can sit peacefully with a good book or contemplate the events of the day. Alternately, garden fountains are a wonderful way to bring the soothing sound of nature indoors.

Consider a small indoor fountain for placement on a dining table or dresser to maximize the flow of life energy and activate positive Chi indoors.

Tips for practicing feng shui in your home:

1. Fill your rooms with natural light. Use light-colored or sheer curtains and open the windows often for fresh air that will energize each room.
2. Study the five elements of feng shui: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, and learn how to use each material and its colors appropriately in various rooms of your home to balance the energy in your environment.
3. Be mindful of your bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. The placement of objects in these three key areas is inherently connected to your health and well-being.
4. Keep doorways and doorsteps free of shoes and clutter so good Chi may travel freely throughout your home.
5. Decorate with the color red sparingly, as it represents the element of fire and could bring undue stress to your home, and accent each room with live plants to feel the yang chi of joy in every indoor space.

Winter always seems to say…quiet down, rest, and go inward, deep, deeper. Examine the strength and mystery within yourself.  It’s time now to refrain from the frantic, rush, rush, rush and assess what is really important!  Prioritize and get on tract.

In Feng Shui energy talk, the Water element signified by the color black or dark blue is at its zenith. The Water element is also known as the winter element since it is so prevalent during this time.  Its direction is north.

This is a yin element and the number associated with it is the number one (1). Objects that represent water include aquariums and fountains.  Animals belonging to this element are the rat and the boar.

The winter months push us humans together. We occupy the same space as before, just a little more closely than before.  Our interior space becomes even more ‘energy’ important as we are challenged to share that space and energy.

This is an opportune time to critically survey the space that the family will share. Make certain that all the Feng Shui 101 basics have been accomplished.  Clean and polish that space! (A complete and thorough housecleaning and straightening with ruthless editing of items is absolutely necessary if energy is to flow in an auspicious manner)

This month the five elements are in the following configuration:

Fire is weakest energy (Extreme Yang energy)
Water is the strongest energy (Extreme Yin energy)
Metal is a waning/weak energy (Yin energy)
Wood energy is born (Yang energy)
Earth energy is strong (Yin energy)

The emotional elements of the water element, which is very strong right now, is that of willpower, magnetism, sensitivity, wisdom, persuasiveness and the ability to focus the mind.  It assists in consolidation, revelation and knowledge and its archetype is the philosopher.  The associated planet is Mercury.

If water is your nourishing element and you do not have a good balance in your Feng Shui assessment, bring water elements into your environment. Since the water element is VERY strong right now, don’t overdo a good thing!  Add a fishbowl, aquarium, irregular shaped glass coffee table, artwork whose predominate color is dark blue or black.

If you have TOO much water, then balance your environment with the energies that will stabilize and balance the water energy.  Fire elements: candles, red triangular shaped object, reds, pinks, oranges in fabrics/ tablecloths, light up that fireplace!

The fire energy and element are at their weakest now, so using Fire energy suggestions are an excellent thing to include in your environment.  You are bringing in and balancing what nature is taking away, thus creating a more harmonious and flowing energy pattern.

Another energy that will soak up some of that water energy is the Wood element. To add wood to your environment bring in a live plant or two. (Some of my plants come inside this time of year.)

Polish up a forgotten wood piece in the attic or basement, use striped fabric or fabric with a floral design.  Wood sculptures, wooden frames on pictures/photos or use wood colors.

The archetype for wood is the pioneer (makes sense, doesn’t it!) The associated planet is Jupiter.

Another element that will help to balance all that water is the earth element. Get out your pottery, concrete/brick type of ornaments, if you have brass objects use them to balance the water element.

Ceramic tile, ceramic drawer pulls, carved stone sculptures and fabric in earth tones will work wonders in balancing the water energy.  The archetype for the earth element is the peacemaker.  The associate planet is Saturn.

I personally have a close association with the water element. I have worked diligently to bring my environment into balance.

Powerful water has been an issue here at my old historic home. There is no basement ….In the 1800’s,( my house dates back to 1804) land was settled where water and animal life were plentiful. I have spent 26 years here.  The gardens and surrounding shrubs and trees have been added to balance all the water that exists here.

In my seasonal table articles I reference that the dining room in is the North, a water element direction, so a large wood table and wood chairs were selected for that space. The brick floor was selected, a large stone fireplace was selected. Wood built-in bookcases were selected.

Wood corner cabinets and side tables were selected in order to balance the extreme and powerful force of the water element. The color, green, associated with wood was selected as a wall color.

On the exterior, an additional garden was added with wood arbor, gate and fencing. Stone walkways meander through the space.

Are you getting a true picture of how much water I have had to balance? If you could have seen the geyser shooting out of the fire pit, perhaps you’d begin to understand the power of water.

From time to time the water finds a tiny crack or crevice that wasn’t recently caulked and finds a way to let me know that the willful, persuasive force of the North is still present. I stand in awe and appreciation of the Water element and its energy!!

Building your own dream home can be very exciting, especially if you decide to use feng shui architecture techniques to help you do it. You’ll be able to plan, layout and build your entire home in the most optimal way that encourages positive energy flow around in every room. The Shape of Your House

If possible, you should choose to build a home that’s a regular square or rectangular shape. These allow symmetry and balance in the house shape. Stay away from irregular shapes like U or L shapes where corners are ‘missing’ that would otherwise complete it and make it a regular shape. Irregular shapes have more potential to cause money or marriage problems.

Although very difficult and expensive to fix, these shaped houses can be corrected or remedied using feng shui architecture cures like mirrors or lights. They should be placed in the ‘missing’ corners to give the illusion of a complete shape, an extension of the home.

The Layout of Your Rooms

Layouts that are more regular in shape we mentioned earlier are much more favored in feng shui architecture. The size of each room should also be proportionate to each other and not too  different in size. High ceilings should be high enough not to feel cramped but not too high that you feel overpowered. They should also be proportionate to the rest of the whole house.

Living Room layout

A large sized room that’s open and welcoming would be the ideal living room to enhance the good chi and keep it flowing around the space. Living rooms should never be higher than any other room, like the kitchen and dining rooms because Sheng Chi (positive energy) of the occupants will attach itself to your guests instead.

Kitchen Layout

Feng shui architecture suggests that your kitchen be located on the right side of the house, next to the family dining room. Disagreements and arguments between your family will ensue if it’s too far away from the dining room, especially between children and parents.

A large mirror in the dining room that reflects the bounty or food on the table is great for wealth luck and good fortune. Make sure it isn’t hanging too low that it visually cuts off the heads of the reflections of people in it.

Layouts of your Bathroom and Toilets

Make sure that there are no doors facing either of these areas. More importantly, you should position the toilet away from the view when looking in from outside the bathroom.

The wealth and prosperity energy of you and your family can be flushed away so be sure to close the bathroom doors at all times. Avoid having them in the north areas of your home, where career energy is focused so opportunities can’t be missed and flushed away.

In your houses layout of all the rooms, feng shui architecture practices strongly advise to avoid direct lines from one entrance to the next. This will encourage the flow of positive chi around your entire home, freely and smoothly.

The Ins and Outs of Your Doors

Great significance is put on the main entrance to your home in feng shui architecture. The door should be of a solid build, of proportionate shape and size in relation to the rest of your house and open inwards.

The hallway it opens into should be bright, wide and welcoming and the door must be oriented correctly with entire house. Remember these feng shui architecture tips when planning the space for your main door as any shifts from these guidelines can bring lots of bad energy for the people living there.

Nothing should serve as a block in front of the main door so clear the space and let the chi flow freely inwards. Back doors that line up exactly with front doors simply mean that your positive energy and luck will come straight in and flow straight out, which after all of your hard construction work, would be the last thing you want.

So take precautions in your feng shui architecture planning to see that this doesn’t happen to you, keep the energy flowing around so that it can work positively for you in your home, life and let you enjoy the benefits it brings.

Your Windows

Regularly shaped windows that open outwards are best to use in your home. Inward opening windows symbolize bad luck for your career or wealth.

Windows that slide up or down or even have a offensive view like a brick wall or any protruding objects should also be avoided, so if possible change their location before construction starts.

Be careful not to add too may windows as this too can be harmful. Disagreements with other family members, most between parents and children will follow so don’t plan for too many windows.

If you’re reading this and have too many windows, don’t start bricking them up just yet, you can use hanging wind chimes or crystals to cure the issue, another great feng shui architecture tip.

The Stairs

Homes with levels of 2 or more should consider having interlinking staircases that are broad and curve gracefully, from the first floor the the main floor for example, and ideally into a large hall.

Spiral staircase should be avoided all together. Make sure that they don’t start from the main door to your house as this will allow the chi in your home to flow right out. Stair steps should not have gaps between them as it symbolizes money flowing out.

Rounded, smooth edged banisters on the stairs are preferred along with good lighting throughout the staircase to bring good energy to the upstairs sleeping areas.

Feng shui cures and remedy items may not be too hard to find if you have a lot of  time to shop, and you live in an big city with a large, thriving Chinatown. Still, it takes time and work to round up exactly what you need.

Last post, I wrote about feng shui door guardians and where to find them, but there are a lot of other important feng shui remedies that are even harder to find. Until now.

I just ran across a search engine for shopping, called ShopWiki. It searches the whole web for you, not just the sites of advertisers, and displays lists and photos of whatever you need, in a wide range of prices.

This is great news for feng shui fans. For example, if you need a red sofa, where do you look? I had never seen a red sofa in a store, but in one search I found dozens, ranging in price from about $60 for a kid-size fold-out foam sofa to magnificent red leather sofas for about $1500.

What if you need a round, white mirror, symbolizing the element of metal? Easy. You can find dozens of round white mirrors, and many other accessories, in many different styles and sizes, at many different prices.

Need a feng shui (octagonal) mirror? Of course there are the small red and green-framed bagua mirrors, but I also found, for example, elegant octagonal wood-framed mirrors for a subtle and beautiful feng shui cure that would blend into any decor without calling attention itself.

Red accent pieces, octagon-shaped tables, peach-colored sheets, peony images, and many other feng shui cures are now easy to find, without even leaving home. Whew! I even found inexpensive sets of bamboo flutes (a classic remedy for exposed ceiling beams and badly angled ceilings).

So now we can easily find all kinds of feng shui items and cures—from Chinese coins (real or reproduction) and tiny red envelopes to large furniture—no matter where we live. Prices range from about $5 up.

And, what a simple way to find feng shui holiday gifts!

Other door guardians include lions and fu dogs. Fu dogs are even less readily available, and they often do not harmonize with Western architecture and decorating styles. Luckily for us, there is a long Western tradition of lions as entrance guardians. So lions are readily available.

Grand public buildings, such as libraries, palaces, museums and government buildings in Europe and the Americas have long featured pairs of huge lions flanking the entrance. For ordinary residences, there is a long tradition of the lion door knocker.

So you can have a doorway guardian that does not attract unwanted attention or criticism even in the most conservative of neighborhoods: a lion’s head door knocker. (You can find a beautifully antiqued lion’s head door knocker at the Mailboxes and Beyond website.)

While you are at it, you can find matching house address plaques, address signs, mailboxes, and other accessories to create a harmonious look. You can even find attractive, inconspicuous, solar-powered lights for safety and convenience (both of which are good feng shui).

You may not have thought of a door knocker, a decorative address plaque or even plain, simple house address plaques as feng shui remedies, but creativity is really the only limitation on feng shui practices.

A huge amount of time is spent in our bedrooms and probably a high percentage of that is spent sleeping. Overall, it accounts for at least one third of our whole life!

Our bedrooms are a place to rest and relax whether we share the space or live alone. It should be a comfortable place, peaceful, a hiding place from the outside stresses of the world and everyday worries, even a place of romance.

Feng Shui Bedroom Tips: #1
Cluttered Space, Cluttered Mind

A well known and must-do rule when using feng shui in any area is to get rid of that clutter. It gathers and piles up over time when we put things off, rush around, keep sentimental items around us or if we’re just plain lazy.

It happens to us all, but realizing that scattered piled up clutter and mess creates a energy trap that stagnates the flow of positive energy causing shar chi or bad energy should be enough for you to take control  of it and clear that clutter away.

It basically serves as a blocking force when energy is trying to flow, stopping it and turning it bad. If it can’t flow, the positive energy diminishes. It can weigh mentally and physically on us in our bedroom, causing restless worrying and a unsettled subconscious.

So open that window, get some fresh air and natural light into the room and clear that clutter, letting the good energy flow its way through. Don’t forget about all the mess under the bed too.

Find a good storage spot for it or get rid of it. In feng shui, bedroom tips like these will not only help make your room a nicer, more inviting place to be, but it will do the same for your mind. Clear the clutter and clear your mind.

Where Should I Sleep?

If you have a full view of the windows and entrance to your room when lying on your bed, you’re off to a great start to the correct feng shui position. Behind you should be a solid wall that symbolizes support and security for you.

Never ever position your bed facing your door so your head, feet and doorway are in one straight line. This is known as the coffin position and will interfere with your sleep with it’s negative energy patterns.

Other things that can interfere with restful sleep are construction beams crossing above you, even mirrors, hanging mobiles or anything else that can hang over the bed. They can drain you of energy and take away those precious hours of rest we need to be healthy.

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Mirrors have reflective qualities that when used in feng shui can help to bounce energy, either good or bad around your space either out of the door or back into the room. In your bedroom however, reflective energy from mirrors will disturb your sleep. Although not recommended, if you do have a mirror in your room, make sure that it doesn’t reflect you when you’re lying on your bed, resting.

If you share your bed with your partner, it’s important that the mirror doesn’t reflect th bed, you or your partner. This symbolizes more than two people in your relationship and can promote infidelity. It’s best to remove the mirrors that break these rules to encourage a healthy, positive bedroom environment.

No Electrics in the Bedroom

In a harmonized feng shui bedroom, there should ideally be no electrical appliances to be seen. They radiate electromagnetic frequencies even when they’re switched off and can lead to restless sleep. Some appliances seem like essentials to a room but if you do have them, try to minimize the amount you have.

Put batteries in your clock radio and get rid of that TV and computer, the bedroom is no place for these even though it seems very convenient. Remove any plugs from their sockets when you’re not using them and keep your head away from any outlets, at least two meters.

Colors, Decoration and Furniture

Strong, bright and bold colors in the bedroom are too much for the bedroom and will unbalance the energy leading to sleep problems. Calming colors and tones are much preferred to reflect the essence of the bedroom, a resting place.

If you have a small room, use even lighter tones to give the illusion of a larger space. Larger rooms should make use of color tones that are a little darker, maybe only on particular walls to help make the space more cozy and comfortable.

Most bedrooms are not overly large, and adding furniture in there can lead to lots of blocked and stagnant energy which is the last thing we want. Limit the pieces of furniture in there, keep things in positions that complement the bed and that don’t display poison arrows or sharp corners.

Round edged tables and chairs for example would be much better. In the same light, bookshelves should also be avoided in the bedroom because of their protruding qualities. Although fresh flowers may seem like a great idea in the bedroom, they will stimulate energy in the room which will not help you sleep soundly.

The same goes for aquariums with moving water features or even pictures of water that will all contribute to vitalizing the energy disrupting your rest.

The feng shui bedroom tips we’ve shows here will not only create a peaceful space, physically and mentally, but it’ll also give you long lasting hassle-free sleep in your intimate personal place of rest.

There should be an even number of chairs in the room and all the furniture should be positioned with a full view of the entrances to the room. If the back of your sofa faces a door or window, you can place a table or screen behind it to remedy the feeling of a lack of support. It is best to have the sofa with its back against a wall.

The Round Table

Round or oval coffee tables are better than rectangular or square ones as these can create ‘poison arrows’ with their corners. Using your coffee table as a place to display flowers or fresh fruit in a bowl will bring greater fresh energy and subsequently leave no room for useless clutter. Make sure flowers or fruit are always fresh however, as dried flowers and rotten fruit will cause negative energy to be stagnant in this room.

Wall of Frame

In feng shui, living room space is ideal for displaying your favourite photos in frames, whether they be on a table, on a shelf or on the wall. It is even better to hang or display your pictures in groups or pairs as singular pictures can create a feeling of loneliness or isolation. For this same reason, it is best to display ornaments or books in groupings on shelves or book cases, but make sure to always keep them neat and tidy.

Box up the Box

As mentioned above, people often like to watch tv in their living room, and why not, as this is often the room you come to relax in. However, in feng shui, a tv is not only counterproductive to family interaction and often hypnotically distracting to all in the room when it is on, but it is also a source of electromagnetic radiation, even when they are switched off.

If you must have a tv in this room and you want to create a positive feng shui living room, you can always contain it along with any other electromagnetic appliance such as a VCR, DVD player and stereo, in a cupboard or tv cabinet with doors and only reveal them when needed. This also keeps the room much neater with cables contained.

Having a feng shui living room is not only better for that balance of harmony and positive energy in your home and in your life, but it will ensure that you room is always neat and tidy for when visitors come over. We need to create balance between these elements in order to achieve harmony in those surroundings. The Bagua is a tool that helps locate different areas of a room or the entire home that corresponds to different areas of your life.

Simply use this tool to determine the areas of your room or home that needs changing and make the necessary changes to improve your life. Finding the right colors is easy as long as you are able to use these two principles together.

According to Chinese astrology, each person is born under a year which is associated with one of the five elements. Each element is then represented by one or more colors.

The five elements interact with each other in both a productive cycle and a destructive cycle. The productive cycle shows how each element creates or produces another while the destructive cycle shows how each element destroys or is destroyed by another.

Once you know the colors representing each element, you will be able to figure out the colors you should surround yourself with and the colors you should stay away from. Incorporate more colors representing your own element as well as the colors of the element that produces your element. Feng shui colors are also used to represent the eight sections of the Bagua. This tool can be used by holding it with the black section facing you and the red section pointing to the direction straight in front of you while standing at the entrance of either an individual room or the doorway of your home.

You will be able to precisely map out the eight sections of that space and its corresponding areas of your life. Look for the areas of your life that needs improving. Incorporate more of the color used to represent that area in that particular section of the room or home.

The diagram below shows us that the five elements are also used in the Bagua. This is important, because it will determine what kind of objects are appropriate for each given section of the room. Different areas of your life can be improved considerably by placing the right objects in the right places.
